What are practical ways to use AI in my daily life?

My take

The most useful everyday AI isn’t flashy. It’s taking the friction out of things you already do. Here’s where I’d start.

Understand long or confusing documents

Leases, insurance policies, benefits packages, terms of service, a 40-page report from work. Paste or upload it and ask: “What are the five things I actually need to know?” or “What’s unusual in here compared to a typical version of this?”

Write the thing you’ve been avoiding

The awkward email, the complaint letter, the note to a landlord or contractor. Tell the AI the situation and the tone you want, and edit its draft. Starting from a draft is far easier than starting from a blank page.

Research a decision

Comparing cars, appliances, travel options, or services. Ask it to lay out the tradeoffs in a table, then ask what questions you should be asking. Check anything important against the original source, since AI can still get facts wrong.

Learn something quickly

Ask for an explanation at your level: “Explain this like I’m new to it,” then “now go one level deeper.” It’s a patient tutor for anything from a new hobby to a topic that came up at work.

Plan and organize

Meal plans from what’s in the fridge, a packing list for a trip, a weekly schedule, breaking a big project into steps.

Take a photo and ask

Most AI apps can see images. Snap a confusing error message, a plant, a restaurant menu in another language, or a form you don’t understand, and ask what it means.

One habit that makes all of this work

Give it context. “Write an email to my landlord” gets a generic result. “Write a short, polite but firm email to my landlord. The dishwasher has been broken for three weeks and I’ve asked twice” gets something you can actually send.
